South Africa has roughly 1.9 million informal micro-enterprises. Stats SA's SESE 2023 survey found that 72% keep no books. They trade in cash, they leave no record, and because they leave no record they cannot prove anything about themselves - not to a bank, not to a supplier, not to the state. A spaza owner who has traded profitably for years is, on paper, indistinguishable from someone who opened last week.
That is not a credit problem. It is an evidence problem, and it is where financial inclusion stalls.
sorted closes that gap on an app these business owners already use. A merchant photographs a receipt or an invoice and sends it on WhatsApp. It is read, categorised and filed automatically, and a running picture of the business builds behind it. Snap it. Send it. Sorted. Nothing to download, no form to learn and no new behaviour to adopt - which matters, because every prior attempt to formalise this market has failed at exactly the point where it asked the merchant to change how they work.
What accumulates is the thing that was missing: a record. Over time that record becomes a structured, merchant-owned view of a business that previously existed only in its owner's memory.
We priced at R99 a month because the price had to be one a street trader could actually pay.
