JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – KasiKonnect, the definitive geospatial intelligence platform for the township economy, launches GEO Loxion, an innovative approach designed to empower municipalities to drive more effective and strategic local economic development (LED).

For decades, local government has faced the immense challenge of stimulating growth in townships with limited data and visibility. This has often led to generic, one-size-fits-all programs with little measurable impact. GEO Loxion is set to change this by providing municipalities with a dynamic, living map of township enterprise, transforming the informal economy into a quantifiable and strategic asset.

“It’s time to stop designing solutions without a clear picture of the mapped data,” said Janice Scheckter, CEO, KasiKonnect. “GEO Loxion gives municipalities the power to see their local economy in a way they never could before. We’re moving beyond guesswork to provide the precision needed for targeted infrastructure upgrades, business support programs, and the creation of specialised economic zones.”

Local economic development in the kasi is often seen as a long-term, complex challenge. But we're convinced that there’s a quicker fix that can have an immediate impact? The first step isn’t a grand scheme, but a simple, strategic action: mapping a municipalities kasipreneurs. Many municipalities have incomplete or outdated data on the vibrant business activity happening on their doorstep. This lack of a clear picture is the single biggest barrier to effective support and effective decision making and planning.
By creating a digital database of every kasipreneur - from the spaza shop owner to the car wash operator and the home-based baker, municipalities could start creating an asset that is a game-changer. This database will give insights into on-the-ground needs, connect them to relevant resources, and, most importantly, include them in municipal procurement processes. Imagine a scenario where a municipality needs catering for an event and can instantly access a list of local, verified kasipreneurs. This isn't just a list; it’s a living, breathing blueprint for local economic inclusion. It provides market access and a clear pathway for these resilient entrepreneurs to formalise and grow. It's time to move beyond the traditional view of informal traders and see them as the economic engines they are.

Whichever way one chooses to view the statistics, township economic growth strategies have not delivered meaningful results to key stakeholders and today 60% of South Africa’s unemployed live in townships.
