Bontle Ke Tlhago is a co-operative that works to uphold the Zulu idiom Ubuhle bemvelo ubuhle besizwe.
This translates to the beauty of nature is the beauty of the nation.
Back in September 2006, nine youths from Diepsloot attended a Buyisa-e-Bag camp. They realised that one solution to youth unemployment was to create a cleaner environment by collecting, sorting, and selling recyclable waste. They registered as a co- operative with the CIPC under the name Bontle Ke Tlhago (Beauty is Nature).
“Our primary goal was to create a buy-back centre with awareness programmes aimed at fostering a cleaner environment and preserving nature to ensure the future well-being of our community.”
To achieve this objective, Bontle Ke Tlhago acquired a nine-year lease in 2012 for the construction and operation of a buy-back centre. PPC Cement funded the structure, and a partnership with Pikitup was subsequently established for the collection of recyclable materials from the community.
Today, around 10 permanent workers are employed by Bontle Ke Tlhago, and more than 80 waste collectors sell their recyclable waste to the co-op.
Bontle Ke Tlhago is proactive in its vision to beautify the environment for the broader community’s enjoyment and has facilitated the planting of more than 300 trees at various schools in Diepsloot and Soweto over the past five years.
