Why Kasi Konnect
To shift the potential of South Africa's informal sector and township economy, a different approach is needed. What has proceeded has not succeeded in creating an economic environment that grows livelihoods and employment.
Township businesses, while prolific, rarely link into value chains or markets outside the township, disabling the opportunity for growth and employment potential.
Public sector initiatives continue to lack innovation and foresight despite the potential for the alleviation of joblessness with 22 million South Africans living in townships. Programmes appear to be designed with poor implementation and outcomes.
A comprehensive study conducted by the International Labour Organisation in 2021, makes a series of recommendations for policy reform. The implementation of this may or may not take place, but the chances of expedited change are slim, and economically, we cannot afford to wait.
Finally, the Study shows the urgent need for an integrated policy framework to address systemic and regulatory constraints, including an integrated business development services package to meet the very practical technical assistance needs of informal workers and economic units.
Soweto Kasi Konnect team comprises a consortium of businesses with people and place development skills. The project is designed to pilot in Soweto but has the potential to replicate in every township environment.
